History of France

A country of contrasts, France has something for everyone. It is an unrivalled cultural centre with plenty to tempt the palate; fine wines, a wealth of architectural gems, fantastic food and endless sporting opportunities (from canoeing, sailing, golf or horse riding through to the ultimate French couch potato experience - the Tour de France on TV).

Whether your preference is for a quiet retreat, an elegant city lifestyle or the trendiest of beachside playgrounds, France can offer the perfect solution. As one of the key European economies, France is also an important commercial and trading centre. It is a modern industrial country whose key industries include oil refining, making steel, agriculture, luxury goods and motor manufacturing. French is an influential European language and is spoken by 59 million people in France alone. Yet it is the romance of the country that enthrals so many of us, with it's huge mosaic of history, it's wide and varied landscapes and a promise of gastronomic heaven under cloudless skies.

If the city life is for you then try the cool chic of Paris, home to Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, or the cities of Tours or Bordeaux, both famous for their long association with the French wine industry. All three cities have huge appeal to a wide range of students.

Further south on the Mediterranean, study and relax in the sunshine of the Riviera and choose from the contrasting options of Nice, Montpellier, Aix-en-Provence, Cannes, Antibes or Hyeres.
